The app includes all Disney, Pixar, marvel, national geographic, and Star wars. However many people do not have access to the Disney plus because it starts at $7.99 a month. This week the newspaper staff posted a poll asking people if they had Disney Plus 61% of the votes voted “no,'' while 39% voted yes. Disney Plus is a new step into the future.

This year, Roanoke Catholic School introduced a new event for the first time. The Oktoberfest that our school hosted had all sorts of fun activities that took place. With free food and drinks for everyone, it wouldn’t have been a surprise if just about everyone had shown up. The idea and plans for the event were all put together by Mr. and Mrs. Danny and Holly Wynne, the owners of Tubs R’ Us, a local company that refinishes tubs for homes and larger residences. See http://www.tubsrusinc.com/ for more information. While the food was advertised to be available only while supplies last, the supplies were more than adequate to support the event for the total of its duration. Other fun portions of the event were the live music from a band whose lead member actually graduated from Roanoke Catholic almost twenty years ago. For the adults, alcoholic beverages were available to complete the experience. The only thing missing was high school students, with a very limited number of highschoolers coming. Some sort of events more geared towards the older students may be able to solve that problem in the future. This event was a great way to spend part of fall, and as the first of a total of four events that the Wynne family has planned, the year is looking to be filled with some great times that won’t cost any money to the participants. By: Anne Notebaert On the fateful day of September 20th, 2019, an event that was originally stated on Facebook actually happened… the storming of Area 51. Area 51 is a United States Airforce base that was used to create a plane that could be undetected in the sky to fly over the Soviet Union during the cold war. The Government needed “High-Altitude reconnaissance aircraft… that could fly over the Soviet Undetected” (Buzzfeed Unsolved.) On November 26, 1954, Allen Dulles, Director of the CIA, entrusted his Assistant in “A Very Secret Program” with the codename Aquatone.
Now it is said that the base holds Aliens and is hiding them from the world, which is why the facebook event ‘Storming area 51’ was created. More than 2 million people had responded “going” so they could “see them aliens.” Almost 100 people went to the government site at 3 in the morning to ‘get to know’ the fence. Only a few people went to the raid itself, but a lot of people went to the festival, even when the location was no longer the county next to area 51. For more information on the raid or Area 51 read this article: https://www.news18.com/news/buzz/area-51-raid-heres-how-many-people-turned-up-and-what-really-happened-2317447.html Or watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2LApgOJe5k By: Dylan Simpkins This past week at Roanoke Catholic was homecoming week in preparation for the school’s homecoming football game on Friday and the dance on Saturday. Kids dressed up in different types of themes for each day of the week to increase school spirit for the week.
Our nominees for homecoming court are Dylan Simpkins, Dillon Porter, and Derek Gilday for homecoming Prince. For Homecoming Princess nominees are Carmen Kuehler, Blair Taylor, and Tonia Zhang. For King nominees are Jared La Treill, Chris Schiable, and Colin Hagy and for Queen is Julia Tsoni, Tania Knipp, and Amelia Pyle. Thursday night the school held a bonfire to top of the week’s excitement. A lot of the Roanoke Catholic families came out to have a good time and interact with other families. The grade levels had a car parade and people voted on what was the best decorated car. Each grade level designed their own car to put into the parade. Friday, Roanoke Catholic has a pep rally in the upper school gym. Where all the fall sports teams are announced. For Monday the theme was athleisure wear. Students came to school with sweatpants and athletic wear. It was a chill day at Roanoke Catholic. Even some of the teachers got involved in this day as well. Tuesday was girls in pearls, and guys in ties. The students got all dressed up with their nice clothes and showed how good they can clean themselves up and for Mass that was held that day. Wednesday was western wednesday. The Roanoke Catholic School students dressed up like cowboys and cowgirls and showed everyone how western they could be. Thursday was class unity day. Students wore their class shirts, that the students made, the classes looked like squads. Friday was just the old typical green and gold day, students wore clothes that showed school spirit. Thomas BeckerFor this year’s senior retreat, the senior class went to the RAM house. The RAM house, which is shortened from Roanoke Area Ministries, has been helping homeless and needy people since it was formed in 1987 by providing free meals for anyone in need. The house is used as a day shelter, which means it provides a safe place for people to hang out during the day when they do not have other places to go. The RAM foundation also provides monetary assistance and scholarships for anyone that needs the assistance to help their livelihood. Every year, the RAM house looks for donations of clothes, especially shoes, socks, and any jackets or other cold weather wear to hand out to people who need shelter from the elements. After taking a tour around the RAM house and talking to the people in charge of the operation, the seniors came back and had lunch at Saint Andrews. The rest of the day was spent discussing Catholic Social Teaching and what the class had heard about during the visit to the RAM house. The class then talked about different goals for senior year, along with the strengths and weaknesses of the class. To learn more about what the RAM house does, or to volunteer to help with their services, visit http://www.raminc.org/
By Adrian WhorleyThere are plenty of upcoming events in the Roanoke area, such as the senior retreat and the Bacon Fest, at Elm Wood Park.
The Bacon Fest starts at 11 a.m. on September 21st and ends at 10 p.m. This festival consists of bacon, beer, a live band and a corn-hole tournament. The winning prize for corn-hole is $500. The senior Retreat is on the 27th of September. The first football home game is next Friday the 13th of September against Norfolk Christian. There are only three home games this season, so it is very important that there is a big crowd for the first home game. By Anne NotebaertOn the 7th and 8th of September, the Roanoke Catholic Cheerleaders hosted a mini-cheer camp for kids in Kindergarten through 7th grade.
The participants learned cheers, stunts, and a dance that will be performed at the first home game this Friday, September 13th. The children all had a great time, and the Cheerleaders that were a part of it did too. “Cheer camp was so much!” said cheerleader Alex Paras. “It was so much fun that I can't choose a favorite part. Interacting with the kids really brightened my day!” By George SmithXavier Bean, a member of the junior class and leader of the Entomology club was able to get his hands on a new pet for the club, a Pink Toe Tarantula.
The Pink Toe Tarantula is a very docile species of Tarantula that is perfect for beginner entomologists to study with little to no risk of being bitten. The Pink Toe Tarantula can reach about five inches in size and can live for over ten years. They are slow moving and live in South America. If you want to see the Tarantula for yourself, drop by one of the Entomology Club’s meetings, held in Mrs. Safford’s room during break. |
